The Creative Futures Academy, UCD is now accepting applications to our autumn modules for 2022/23.

FS10060 Cinema Creatives: An Introduction to the Cinema Landscape in Ireland.

Over 12 weeks, this course will provide an immersive dive into contemporary Irish cinema culture and introductions to key creative forces within film production, while also exploring the areas such as exhibition and distribution and explore how our national cinema is shaped by film criticism and media.

The course will be structured around a weekly interview with a noted film practitioner, accompanied by a related screening. The course will outline the diverse backgrounds, routes, training and influences of key creatives and outline the structure of filmmaking teams and their role in contemporary Irish cinema. The curation and programming of film is a vital element of cinema exhibition and this course will offer students the opportunity to learn about key aspects of film programming, engage with industry experts and design their own film event. Students will be encouraged to submit and ask questions of guests.

Begins 16^th September. Lectures weekly on Friday at 9am-10am in UCD. Tutorials weekly on a Tuesday (time TBC).

DRAM10030 Theatre Matters

This module offers students an introduction to theatre’s role in culture and society, and to working roles in theatre and performance. Using examples of international practice, students will examine key roles in the collaborative creation of the theatrical event, and gain insight into current debates on the artistic, and cultural functions of live theatre and performance.

In Small Group Teaching groups students will learn about selected aspects of live performance, principles of space and design, audience responses and dramaturgy. Students will visit a performance and write an analysis of what they have seen.

Begins 12^th September. Lectures weekly on Monday at 12noon-1pm. Tutorials weekly on a Monday/Tuesday (time TBC).

EDF20010 Creativity

The aim of this course is to focus on the processes of creativity and creative collaboration across the three subject areas of English, Drama and Film. Students will engage with a number of case studies that will introduce them to the dynamics of creative production in the broad context of the creative industries.

Students will benefit from engagement with a number of distinguished UCD Creative Fellows who will make guest contributions during the term. In terms of assessment, students will be required to produce original creative outputs rather than conventional academic essays and assignments.

Begins 16^th September. Lectures take place weekly on Friday at 10am-12noon in UCD.

DRAM40520 Writing for Screen

This module equips writers with the specialized skills for script development across a variety of genres. Over twelve weeks, our intention will be to lift ideas from the page into the material world. Collaborative in-class exercises and portfolio assignments will explore how voice, gesture, movement and space contribute to meaning within the frame of the screen.

Weekly reading will develop students’ ability to analyse and evaluate the practical guides and scholarship related to screenwriting. Each student will have the opportunity to share their ongoing progress and to contribute as co-writers and participating editors in the work of their peers.
Attention to the current industry landscape will identify pathways for writers beginning their careers. External speakers will join us for two participatory workshops, engaging students with their professional experience.

Module begins 14^th September. Lectures take place weekly on Wednesday 10am-12noon. A film screening will take place weekly on Tuesdays at 5pm in UCD.

HUM40050  Arts & Events Programming

Led by Creative Futures Academy Artistic-Director-In-Residence, Jennifer Jennings (THISISPOPBABY), the module offers supportive and structured opportunities for students to develop their own distinctive approach towards programming, exploring a variety of contexts such as arts festivals, cultural venue seasons, music festivals, event series and club nights.

With guest lectures and panels from top Irish and international programmers speaking about their preoccupations and approaches, the module aims to develop a creative, entrepreneurial and ethical framework for the arts and events programmers of the future.

This module is aimed at graduate level students, and any professionals who have experience of the arts industry.

The module will take place on Friday mornings in UCD, beginning Friday September 23rd with the final class on 2nd December. We are delighted to offer this module to our CFA partners and your graduate students this trimester.
