Finding the story you want to tell is a fundamental part of any film maker’s journey – whether it’s documentary, animation or live action drama. As the Galway Film Fleadh was in full swing over a gloriously sunny weekend, on the 12th July CFA hosted a panel discussion at the Galmont Hotel with 5 talented film makers about their own struggles and searches for compelling stories.

The eclectic panel included Caleb J Roberts, Esosa Ighodaro, Giovanna Ferrarri, Oliva McLaughlin & Josh O’Caoimh – all talented artists and writers with films screening in the Fleadh. The conversation touched on so many topics that inform and build the stories they choose to tell – gender, race, personal perspectives, emigration, humour, funding, collaboration…

Each participant had a unique story to tell and a different path into the film industry, but everyone shared a passion for authentic stories that touched universal themes through personal inquiry and honesty. The generosity of the panel & their openness for each other’s perspectives was heartwarming and instructive.

For me the great takeaway from this stimulating event was that the best stories are both deeply personal and profoundly universal. Yes, It takes clarity, wit and craft to find your story – but it also requires being open to where your inquiry might take you. Writing isn’t just about putting your story on paper – at its best it’s a journey that changes as you travel (if you allow your story & your characters to grow as you go).
