This short course is aimed at learners who wish to go beyond pre-determined graphic tools in software packages but instead generate their images using code structures.
The course aims to give you a theoretical and practical overview of creating images and animations using Generative Art techniques.
You will:
– be introduced to coding structures to create images, animated and interactive pieces.
– complete a portfolio of Generative Art pieces.
– research computational artists and write a small individual response to their artworks.
Students who successfully complete this course will receive a Certificate in Professional Skills for Creative Industries (Level 8 Award, 5 ECTS).
There will be two parts to the assessment with a further breakdown of marks within each part, as follows:
1. Academic (25%)
A written investigation (1,000 words) into an artist, their impact on digital art and your appreciation of their art and style.
2. Individual work: (75%)
You will develop a portfolio around 3 themes:
– A series of outputs animations that contrast chaos, randomness versus structure in grids. (25%)
– A generative design system that can be modified by user-input, such as touch, mouse-movement or UI elements (Sliders, checkboxes). (25%)
– An interactive piece that responds dynamically to changing of data, location time, motion. (25%)
This course will be delivered over 4 days on a blended format:
Tuesday 13th February 2024 | 7pm – 9pm | online
Saturday 17th February 2024 | 9am – 4pm | on campus
Saturday 2nd March 2024 | 9am – 4pm | on campus
Wednesday 13th March 2024 | 7pm – 9pm | on campus
Entry requirements include Leaving Certificate Examination (Level 5 Award) or equivalent. Applicants without this may also be considered based on their prior experience and learning through IADT’s RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) process.
For the online classes, you will need a computer / laptop with Internet connectivity and up to date browser.
The course is offered free of charge; funded by IADT and the Creative Futures Academy, under the Higher Education Authority’s Human Capital Initiative.
IADT operates on a rolling admissions basis. This means that applications are reviewed as and when they are received.
Should you apply for a course that is already at capacity, our admissions team will have established a waiting list to accommodate such situations. In the event that a spot becomes available due to enrolment changes, we will work diligently to offer that spot to waitlisted applicants.
